What exactly is Psychotherapy?

It is essentially a talking therapy, aimed at the way people think about or behave in response to conditions or events in their life which are causing them problems. Psychotherapy is the use of psychological ideas and theories in the treatment of such problems. Do you frequently suffer from panic attacks? If so we can discuss your experiences and the context in which they occur to look for possible triggers and stressors in your daily life which may trigger the panic attacks.

Can Psychotherapy help me?

Psychotherapy can help a wide range of disorders, including depression, compulsive behaviour, low self esteem, self confidence and even dealing with childhood abuse.

Is Psychotherapy for me?

There are a vast array of drugs which are used in Psychotherapy, but they all have side effects and whilst they are sometimes necessary for particular disorders, or in exceptional circumstances, for many conditions the treatment of choice is Psychotherapy. The range of techniques available today in Psychotherapy is such that if one technique is not suitable there are others that will prove satisfactory.

Cognitive behaviour therapies

Cognitive behaviour therapy assumes that problems people experience is the result of dysfunctional beliefs or thoughts. The treatment focuses on helping you to become aware of these dysfunctional thoughts and beliefs and subsequently change these thoughts and beliefs.

If you are suffering from a phobia it is typically a fear of some event or something in particular which has its origins, more usually in the distant past, but could be of more recent origin. You will be helped and encouraged to overcome your fears using behavioural techniques, along with challenging any negative thoughts about your fear and looking for alternative positive thoughts. Similar treatments can be applied to a number of disorders you may be suffering from.
